I love this show the parents and the boys all clearly loved each other albeit in their own dysfunctional way but yeah Hal and Lois did the boys dirty sometimes lol The boys were terrible, mindless thugs who did not give a crap but there were some really mean spirited, petty, neglectful things that Hal and Lois did towards their sons, Francie, Reese, Malcolm, Dewey. Jamie was too young lol 1. Lois sending Francis away to stay with Ida for 3 or 6 months (I don't remember how long his stay with her was). Come on now, overwhelmed or not Lois knows how bad her mother is. That old racist, abusive, neglectful woman should not have been a mother, let alone should she have been allowed to basically raise Francis on her for a period of time. No wonder he came out so emotionally stunted and was such a screw up. It took him a good junk of time to grow up lol 2. Both Hal and Lois (but mostly Lois) Micromanaging Malcom and using him as the golden goose who will bring himself and the whole family out of poverty.
Lois embarrassing Malcom on his first day of high school when she saw that stain on his pants. Come on Lois KNEW EXACTLY what she was doing. She blow that thing way out of the proportion, was yelling and screaming in front of everyone lol cause Malcolm to be nicknamed Stain lol 5. Hal and Lois, spending Malcom's scholarship money. Spent days fighting over it, then Dewey found out, and they decided to split it 3 ways lol, just for Lois to take the money and spend it on a dumbass dollhouse that literally ended up bursting into flames lol Right take the money, but at least spend it on bills, food, new clothes, fixing up your run down house, getting another bed for second to last son lol 6. Hal constantly making the boys take the fall for his crazy schemes lol 7. Their overall continued economic challenges that they found themselves in. Yes they both had jobs, but they were terrible with money. Whenever they got money they blew it on stupid things. They never saved, the boys were always in and out of the hospital, they were always breaking stuff and causing damage to other people's property, and they were always getting arrested and having to go to court lol 8.
Almost every episode of Malcolm in the Middle ends with the sound of a door being slammed shut. It returns Malcolm's family – a combustive medley of troublemakers and misfits – back to the status quo. This is standard in sitcoms; everything returns to how it was. The difference is, in Malcolm in the Middle, the status quo is bleak. Unlike the characters in, say, Friends, who live comfortably in midtown apartments with lives seemingly unbothered by work, Malcolm's family is poor. Every joke, plot and resolution revolves around this material fact. I grew up thinking Malcolm in the Middle was a zany show about four quarrelsome brothers and their parents. Re-watching it now it's clear what the show is actually about: the idea that meritocracy is a sham, social institutions are corrupt and wage-labour is cruel. The parents, Hal and Lois, have a comically carnal relationship, which I didn't really understand when I was young. It's a way of protecting themselves from the vicissitudes of capitalism.
