Staff reluctant to claim the actual amount of time they spend on tasks, for fear of reprisal from management. The salary has eroded over the years due to benefits being made harder to claim. It is supposed to be part time, 20 hrs a week, but one has to be available 6 days a week between 9am and 9pm. The transformation programme implemented by management has diminished motivation amongst staff. 10 yrs ago this was a great organisation to work in, but if you want to go out talking to the public, collecting statistical information, suggest you work for a different company. It is no longer a nice organisation to work for. Pros Not the ones there used to be Cons part time job, requiring full time availability. Eroded benefits. Micro management I have worked for the ONS for over 10 years and it has become increasingly worse over the last few years. Constant micro management of performance and little to nothing in return. This organisation will literally work you to the bone and give you a salary that's worse than stacking shelves in a supermarket.

They do pay any additional earnings at the end of the tax year but I didn't want the extra hours. That didn't go down too well with my manager. Lots of employee commitment, eg. own car required with business use clause [I covered 2, 000 miles in ten weeks at 45p / mile in a brand new car] own internet and telephone connection, own laptop. It does say you need these things but it's only when I got into it that I realised the real commitment. Unfortunately, I was living in cloud cuckoo land. In reality, this was very unlikely to happen. The job is permanent - in my case up to the annualised advertised contracted hours of 1114 per annum (mean average 2. 5 days per week over 12 months with holiday and sick pay entitlements taken out too) but there is a hidden bolt on element to the annualised hours contract too: this works rather like a zero hours contract whereby ONS also expected fieldworkers to take on more work in any week when necessary and at any time of the week over six days from 7-9pm and at normal pay rates of pay (overtime for Sunday, which was rare). Expected to do late evenings & weekends to try get people in by door knocking. I refused to do this as a lot of areas weren't safe. It is definitely not what the job description says. Put a lot of unnecessary miles and wear & tear on my car.
I didn't like working from home either thought I would I lasted less then six months as so awful. I'd done 26 years With my previous civil service job. The interviews itself are quite pleasant and you do tend to connect with people and have a good chat while interviewing. And if you can talk about anything about the area or make a joke to break the ice, it does put the interviewer defences down. You work alone most of the time but its the repetitive knocking on door of the same address to persuade the resident to allow you to carry on with the interview. The interview codding its all about practising. I feel the the surveys should be compulsory with the rights to refuse certain questions. Because when you spend most of the day knocking on the door and same time you travel a certain distance even a 10 minutes distance becomes quite frustrating because you know it will be a wasting trip. Pros You make your own time around your life Cons it's not fun to constantly knock on people's doors knowing they're in need to be on call 24/7.
